Interaction

Celebrating the First Anniversary of Korean Cultural Center of Chicago (KCCoC)

Sponsored by the Chicago Korean-American Art Association

Curated by Sun H. Choi

Opening Reception: June 23th 5pm -8pm

KCCoC was established in 2005 through grassroots fundraising.  In April, 2010, it acquired a campus-style facility in Wheeling, Illinois.  This Korean Cultural Center serves as a community hub for cultural exchange and charitable and educational programs.  It houses a Korean museum, art gallery, library, classrooms, dance studio, and gathering areas open to all.

The exhibition title "Interaction” refers not only to people of different backgrounds living side by side but the process of influencing each other. The title also applies to the mutual dependence and collaboration between the artists.  During the creation process, the way artists communicate with other artists is influenced by their cultural backgrounds. There is also an interaction between the media used for a single piece and adjacent ones. How the audience is expected to interpret the theme, medium, color and perspective is an aspect of the collaborative nature of this exhibit. Lastly, the artists’ interpretation of the work is a function of things like culture, gender, religion and content.

This show consists of Western style and Korean traditional paintings, ceramics, fiber, mixed media and installations produced by artists of diverse cultural backgrounds. Some works on display will be available for sale.
